I've been reflecting on how much creativity – or the lack of it – impacts my mental health and anxiety levels.
I haven’t made time for making things recently – drawing, stitching, punch needling – and one day this week I woke up realising that this was directly correlated with my anxiety levels, which had rocketed.
Not that the current state of the world hasn’t played its part; I have never felt so emotionally connected to global affairs. Being European and living in the USA, with the ability to view events from different perspectives, is pretty frightening, to be honest. I refuse to succumb to the media’s scaremongering, but right now it is hard to avoid.
A little while back, I signed up for a course on drawing interiors digitally. I found Anna online and was immediately mesmerised by the quality and precision of her drawings.
After watching a few free workshops and lurking on the sidelines, I decided to purchase the course. With my need to get my hands busy and let my brain forget about the world for a little while; it was the perfect time to use the course as a daily creative break. I can’t even begin to tell you how much everything has improved.
It may not be perfect, but I've seen time and again how creativity soothes my anxiety.
The weather has been a drain also. I don’t like this time of the year, especially in the Midwest. I know some people absolutely love looking out the window to see a white blanket of snow – it’s cute for a day or two, perhaps even a week – but when you are consistently greeted by it every time you open your window, I promise you that the novelty wears off very quickly.
And it’s not just the snow – it’s the cold. It’s absolutely freezing at the moment, which means I don’t enjoy walking outdoors, and my body hasn’t really felt the wind – let alone soaked up any vitamin D – in ages.
So anyway for now I will be hiding indoors dreaming of how it will soon be lovely and warm again,
Have a beautiful rest of your day and week to come,
Much love,
Peggy x
